District Clay: ‘Seize the Clay’ at This Ceramics Studio Near Rhode Island Row

District Clay’s motto is “seize the clay,” which is more than just a clever play on words. The mission of this art studio, located not too far from Rhode Island Row, is to encourage people to take their creativity into their own hands—even those who don’t think of themselves as particularly “artsy.”

With classes available at beginner, intermediate, and expert levels, as well as top-of-the-line facilities, District Clay has everything you need to start exploring pottery and ceramics. The large studio space, located in a renovated warehouse near Brookland, includes 14 new pottery wheels, an enormous gas kiln and a smaller electric kiln, and students have unlimited access to clay and glazes. There’s even a small lending library of books and films to help you learn more about pottery basics. For more experienced students, an artist-in-residence program can expose you to new techniques and expressions.
